Abstract

In the 1970’s the Netherlands has suffered so called ‘the Dutch Disease’ with long term economic recession and high unemployment rate, and the two times Oil Crisis made it worsened. Despite of different optics and explanations regarding the causes of this economic and social crisis, no one can deny the only one working medicine for the Dutch Disease, the Accord of Wassenaar in 1982. No argument against the efficiency of this healing instrument. Advocates of the Dutch model like to claim that this remedy was a direct consequence of the polder model, or the consensus model. The more fervent even urge the rest of the world to learn from it and to adopt a similar model themselves. In this study the role of Dutch Labour Unions in fostering Poldermodel and its relations with the political parties will be briefly examined. The typical Dutch social phenomenon ‘the Social Pillarisation, de Sociale Verzuiling’ on its turn contribute to enhance the mutual cooperation and solidarity. Furthermore the leaders’ influence and determination of each pillar should not be overlooked, such as Wim Kok’s leadership shown in Wassenaar, 1982. Tolerance and pragmatism are the key words to understand the Dutch society. And the Dutch poldermodel reflects these attitudes. Thanks to all these factors the Dutch economy could be recovered in short time, and the ‘Dutch Miracle’ has been come true. Whether the Poldermodel is the suitable model to adopt for us or not, it is still worthy to examine its implications, because the Dutch model has been worked successfully in the Netherlands.
