Abstract

This article began with the question of where their ancestors came from, focusing on the fact that the surname of Morye(毛禮) who appears in the early history of Silla Buddhism is Sa(史). According to some records of Samguk Yusa and Samguk Sagi, Ado, Mukhoja, and others came to Silla from China and Goguryeo several times to spread Buddhism in Silla. However, although the times at which they came to Silla were different, it is said that they all stayed at the house of the owner of Morye in Dogae-ri, Seonsan, Gyeongbuk Province, and preached. While they were preaching at Morye's house, they were invited to the palace, where they told the king about the uses of the incense brought by the Liang(梁) envoy, and cured the princess's illness. Judging from this, it seems that Morye already knew about Buddhism and had information about the role of monks and Buddhist activities. In the end, Morye's family is recognized as the first lay believers in the history of Silla Buddhism, and in particular, his sister became the first female monk in Silla. Meanwhile, Ilyeon(一然) reveals that their surname is Sa(史). At that time, Silla did not have any special surnames other than those of the royal family, Park(朴), Seok(石), and Kim(金), so it was highly unusual that there was a rare surname like Sa(史), even today. Moreover, the founder of the Sa family in Korea today was a person from the middle to late Goryeo period, so seems to have even less connection to the Morye's family. Here, based on various evidences of East-West trade via the Silk Road in the 4th to 6th centuries, I would like to argue that the Sa surname of Morye's family could be the surname of Shǐguó(史國), one of the surnames of Zhāowŭjiŭxìng(昭武九姓), the most representative state among the 36 countries of the Western Regions. Seonsan was a passageway between Silla and Goguryeo, and because of the nearby Nakdong River, it was a transportation hub since ancient times and was one of the tributaries of the Silk Road. Accordingly, I attempted to investigate the possibility that Morye and his family, who played an important role in the process of Buddhism being introduced to Silla, may have had ties to the Shǐguó(史國).
