Abstract

One year has passed since the appearance of an uninvited and unanticipated guest, COVID-19. If we merely protected ourselves from COVID-19 via quarantine in 2020, we expect 2021 to be the year in which we counterattack it with vaccines and medications. Contrary to initial pessimistic predictions that it would take five to ten years to develop vaccines, companies are now mass-producing vaccines to cope with the coronavirus outbreak in less than a year. Given this situation, it would be meaningful to reflect on the first vaccination ever, the vaccinia virus vaccination, and its forerunner, variolation. Would it have been possible to discover vaccination without variolation? This is a very hard question to answer, but it is generally accepted that Edward Jenner’s experience of variolation served as a catalyst for the development of vaccine inoculation. Vaccine inoculation also demonstrated that the exchange or acceptance of knowledge among different medical systems has become a stepping stone to the next level of medical development. Moreover, vaccination like variolation was a typical example of how mainstream medicine accepted and systematized wisdom based on lay people’s experiences. The history of vaccines, which began with Jenner’s vaccination, is set for a new era in which a pandemic is overcome at its peak for the first time. The future will never be smooth sailing, but with this breakthrough, both mankind and medicine will have a completely different power than in the past.
