Abstract
Many Christians today believe that they will go to heaven after death and will live there forever. This "heavenly faith" is not congruent with the reformed understanding that believers ' eternal dwelling place is the new or renewed heaven and earth rather than an immaterial, transcendental sphere. But might not this "heavenly faith" receive Paul's support? To answer this question, the present article identifies tow constitutive beliefs of this "heavenly faith" and tests their validity against Paul's letters. The first constitutive belief of the "heavenly faith" is that heaven is the place where God dwells and a believer is relocated after death, and it is essentially separated from earth. This belief is only partially supported by Paul. Paul does believe that God and the enthroned Christ dwell in heaven and that believers are transferred to heaven after death. However, heaven is not separated from earth but is rather combined with it, as a result of Christ's resurrection-ascension that brought heaven and earth together as a unified sphere under Christ's rule. It is for this reason that believers, through their union with Christ, are seated with Christ in heaven even before death while living on earth. The second constitutive belief of the "heavenly faith" is that heaven remains separated from earth even after the return of Christ, and believers will live with Christ forever in heaven away from earth. This belief receives little support from Paul. For Paul, Christ's work of uniting heaven and earth under his rule through his resurrection-ascension reaches consummation rather than reversal at Christ's return. In Paul's description, when Christ returns, rather than taking his people to a heavenly realm away from earth, he will defeat death and all the other evil powers that unlawfully rule the world and bring the entire created world under God's consummate rule. For Paul, therefore, the ultimate dwelling place for believers is not heaven but the "new heaven and earth" filled with God's presence and permeated by God's complete rule. In conclusion, it is highly difficult to attribute this "heavenly faith" to Paul
