Abstract
This study aims to examine the characteristics of local public officials' perception on climate change adaptation and to draw some policy implications. Adaptation needs a bottom-up approach because climate impacts and vulnerability are location-specific. Climate change literature suggests that political leadership or public official's understanding plays a key role in responding to climate change. A survey was made among 324 local public officials in Gyeonggi-Do. ANOVA was used to investigate the relationship between their personal and organizational variables and the perceived support of adaptation policy. The result shows that the knowledge level of adaptation is lower than that of general climate change. Climate change education makes the important difference in their adaptation knowledge and policy support. Another important implication is that the more they perceive the relevance to their job responsibilities and organizational goal, the more they support local adaptation policy. It is concluded that, considering the priority of the adaptation policy is not high at the local level, enhancing the adaptive capacity of public officials through education and guidelines is critical.
