Abstract

Social banks lend at a lower interest rate than the market interest rate, with multiple economic and social goals. Nonetheless, they are achieving financial independence in addition to their social goals. The reason can be found in reciprocity based on mutual trust and value sharing between social banks and borrowers. Despite the low interest rate, the reciprocity raises the debt repayment rate, enabling the financial independence and social goals of social banks. If we determine the scope of setting the loan interest rate of social banks on the basis of the characteristics of the social bank, it would be said that it is lower than the interest rate of commercial banks, although it must cover the funding and operating costs. The factors affecting the loan interest rate include the rate of repayment of the borrower, the degree of response to the interest rate change of the mission drift, and the marginal disutility of mission drift in social banks.
