Abstract

Dictee can be a collection of nine mixed writing styles and this work crosses the boundaries of a novel and an autobiography. This reminds us of diaspora immigrants since she herself was on the borders of race and nationality, but she could not be easily incorporated anywhere. In this respect, the ambiguity of this text is often discussed. I will derive Hak Kyung Cha’s clear intention by regarding Dictee as a unified organism which consists of segmented units and by escaping the text’s ambiguity. In order to understand this text, it is highly important to figure out the combinations of words that make up the text. In particular, this work requires a more multi-layered approach as the number of non-textual records are relatively large. This ambiguity of the text stems from the resistance to the traditional ruling discourses. Also, this is a resistance to the traditional writing which is based on the description of a causality and the combination of homogeneous elements. Through women’s writing, the author re-examines the women who have been excluded and suffered from pains in the male-centered ideology. This attempt is presented in the postmodern experiments. I will present how non-textual elements of Dictee are connected to each other organically by analyzing various non-textual elements such as cinematic techniques, uncaptioned photographs, and diagrams, etc. Thus, it will be observed that the author’s intention to remember the pain of the underprivileged such as women and immigrants and heal the wounds accumulated through the diaspora is achieved through readers’ engagement in reading the text.
