초기 동북아시아 선교에서 나타나는 디아코니아적 특징과 기원연구 - 한(韓)·중(中)·일(日) 선교에 나타나는 기독교 사회주의(Social Gospel)를 중심으로 -

초록

이 논문은 동북아시아의 개신교 선교에 나타나는 디아코니아적 특징을연구하기 위해 선교사들의 사상 가운데 기독교 사회주의 사상이 선교 현지에서 어떻게 전개되고 정착하였는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 먼저 기독교 사회주의라는 정의를 파악하기 위해 그 기원을 역사적인 방법으로 접근하였다. 기독교 사회주의는 개인의 신앙 회복뿐만 아니라 사회문제를 회복하고자 하였고 이러한 사상은 동북아시아에 파송된 선교사들에게까지 영향을 끼쳐 선교방법에 영향을 주었다. 하지만 선교사들의 의도와는 달리 한국, 중국, 일본의 정치 외교적 상황과 현지인의 수용 태도에 따라 기독교 선교의 양상은 각기 다르게 나타났다. 중국 선교에서 나타나는 디아코니아적 특징은 당시 사회적으로 낮은 계층의 중국인에게 섬김으로 다가갔을 뿐 아니라 현지인과 함께 했던 성서번역에서 현지인의 이해에 초점을 맞추고 배려하여 외국인에 대한 반감을감소시키는 결과를 가져다주었다. 이에 현지인 개종자가 나오게 되고 기독교가 정착하는 계기가 되었다. 일본 선교에서 나타나는 디아코니아적 특징은 개신교를 근대화의 산물로 간주, 천황제 이데올로기로 접근하였던 현지인들의 태도로 그 의미가 퇴색되어 버렸고 기독교 선교 정착마저 다른 양상으로 전개되었다. 한국 선교에서 나타나는 디아코니아적 특징은 근대 교육을 필요로 하였던 한국 현지인의 요구로 교육과 의료, 교회를 중심으로 선교가 이루어졌다. 선교사들은 낮은 계층의 현지인에게 신앙과 사회 변화를 목표로 선교활동을하였다.

Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of missionaries through research on Korean church history. So far, studies on the characteristics of missionaries in Korea have been conducted in relation to how far both the missionaries themselves and the local people were accepted. many studies have been conducted in this way, many of their results suggest that the spread of the Gospel in Korea was due to its spontaneous acceptance. However, when observed in the broader context of Northeast Asia, this characteristic appeared only in Korea, but also in other mission areas. Against this backdrop, this study will examine missionary work in Northeast Asia from various different angles. First, under the influence of the Second Great Awakening that occurred in American Christianity, the American Protestant missionaries who were dispatched to Northeast Asia were aiming for a societal baptism of fire as well as personal conversions. These trends appeared in forms such as “Social Christianity” and the “Social Gospel”, Second, we can understand the impact of the missions when we consider the situation in Northeast Asian countries at the time when Protestantism was spread there. This is due to the fact that missionaries at that time had a sense of homeland: that they were from one of the Western Powers, that the Western Powers to which they belonged were approaching Northeast Asian countries under a complex political and diplomatic structure, and that they were directly and indirectly exposed to these influences. Third, in order to explore the characteristics of missionary work in Northeast Asia, we need to examine how western missionaries approached missionary work within different mission fields. In these ways, we can see that missionary work in Northeast Asia carried a different meaning according to the specific local situations and the recipients’ attitudes towards the missionaries.
