Abstract

Based on the experiential avoidance model, this study investigated whether distress intolerance mediates the relationship between negative affect intensity and non-suicidal self-injury(NSSI), and examined the moderated mediation effect of mindfulness. For this, the data measuring negative affect intensity, distress intolerance, mindfulness, non-suicidal self-injury were collected from 436 general adults aged 18 to 30, and the collected data were analyzed by controlled mediation model. The results were as follow. First, distress intolerance was found to fully mediate the relationship between negative affect intensity and non-suicidal self-injury. Second, the moderating effect of mindfulness in the relationship between distress intolerance and non-suicidal self-injury was significant. As the level of mindfulness increased, the possibility of NSSI would decreases even with lack of distress intolerance. Third, the moderated mediating effect of mindfulness was confirmed in that the mediating effect of distress intolerance was not significant when the level of mindfulness was high, whereas the mediating effect of distress intolerance was significant when the level of mindfulness was low or medium. Finally, we discussed the significance of this study, implications for the counseling practice and suggestions for future research.
