이 연구는 보에티우스의 『철학의 위안』에 나타나 있는 인간의 운명과 행복, 그리고 신의 섭리와 인간의 자유의지에 관한 그의 견해를 살펴보고 그것으로부터 교육학적 함의를 밝히기 위한 것이다. 이 작품은 한평생 고결한 삶을 살기 위해 노력하다가 부당한 죽음을 당하게 된 한 무고한 철인 정치가의 ‘마지막 생각’에 해당한다. 집필 배경이 이러한 만큼, 이 작품의 중심 주제는 ‘고통의 문제’에 대한 신학적 해명인 신정론이라고 볼 수 있는데, 그 문제는 ‘신이 존재한다면 악은 어디서 오는 것이며, 신이 존재하지 않는다면 선은 어디서 오는 것인가?’ 하는 것으로 기술된다. 그러나 이 연구는 이 작품이 고통의 문제를 통하여 궁극적으로는 선의 의미와 그것의 실현 과정으로서 인간의 실존적 삶을 조명하고 있다는 점에 주목하면서 무엇보다도 이 작품이 지니는 교육학적 의미를 탐색하고자 한다. 이렇게 볼 때 이 작품에서 보에티우스와 그를 치료하기 위하여 찾아온 철학 여인이 함께 논의한 주제는 ‘이 땅에서 몸을 가지고 유한한 삶을 살아가는 인간 존재가 어떻게 운명의 필연성에서 벗어나 영원한 행복 곧 신적 자유를 누릴 수 있는가?’ 하는 것으로 기술될 수 있다. 이러한 관점에서는 악의 존재 이유나 고통의 문제가 인간으로서 마땅히 추구해야 할 좋은 삶을 어떤 삶인가를 해명하는 맥락에서 다루어진다. 인간의 삶의 목적은 그로 하여금 ‘외면성’을 극복하고, ‘내면의 인간’을 찾아가도록 하기 위한 여정으로 해석될 수 있다. 내면의 인간은 지식과 자유의 상태에 있는 인간을 가리키는 만큼, 그것은 교육을 통하여 끊임없이 성장하는 자아의 모습을 규정한 것이라고 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine Boethius’ arguments on human destiny and happiness, divine providence, and human free will in Consolation of Philosophy, and to clarify their educational implications. This work corresponds to the “last thoughts” of an innocent philosopher-politician who suffered an unjust death while trying to live a noble life. Based on the writing background, the central theme of this work can be regarded as a theological explanation of the “problem of suffering,” which is described as “Where does evil come from if God exists, and where does good come from if God does not exist?” However, this study explores the educational meaning of this work, while paying attention to the fact that that it ultimately sheds light on the meaning of goodness, change in human existence, and human existential life as a process of realizing it through the problem of suffering. In this regard, the topic discussed by Boethius and the philosophical woman who came to treat him can be described as “How can a human being living a finite life with a body on this earth escape from the inevitability of fate and enjoy eternal happiness, that is, divine freedom?” From this point of view, the reason for the existence of evil and the problem of suffering are dealt with in the context of explaining what kind of life should be pursued by a human being. The purpose of human life can be interpreted as a journey to overcome “externality” and find “the inner man.” As the inner man refers to a man in a state of knowledge and freedom, it defines the self that constantly grows through education.
