Abstract

This study investigates the characteristics and significance of Bunsodanja(分所單子), a type of official document concerning the assignment of palace guard duty posts during the late Joseon dynasty. Bunsodanja refers to documents issued by Byeongjo(兵曹), the central military administrative body, to assign officers of the Owi(五衛) and captains of the Hunryeondogam(訓鍊都監) to designated duty posts (bunso, 分所) within the royal palace, with final approval granted by the king. Distinct from previous research primarily focused on institutional-level developments, this paper highlights the operational realities of the palace guard system through an analysis of four extant examples of Bunsodanja, alongside historical sources. The analysis yields several key insights. First, the consistent supervision of Bunsodanja by Byeongjo, regardless of the officers’ military affiliations, suggests that palace guard assignments were centrally managed rather than autonomously conducted by individual commands. Second, the king handwrote the assigned bunso and authorized the document using the Jeseung-in(制勝印), a royal seal designated for military affairs—marking a clear departure from ordinary bureaucratic procedures and reflecting the king’s direct involvement and authority in military command. Third, cases in which the Eopil(御 筆), or royal handwriting, was preserved and later repurposed indicate both the symbolic importance of the king’s script and the distinctive practices of document preservation and reuse during the period. In this respect, Bunsodanja serve as valuable materials for understanding the procedural structure of palace guard assignments, the role of royal scripts and seals in official documentation, and the broader documentary culture of the late Joseon period. Although the analysis is based on a limited number of surviving examples, the documents’ form and content offer a careful glimpse into the functioning of military administration and state documentation. Future comparative research on other document types bearing Eopil or Jeseung-in may further illuminate the bureaucratic structure and symbolic dimensions of military governance in late Joseon.
