Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Spatial design has long been dominated by a “pleasure first” paradigm, which assumes that positive emotional experiences should be maximized through the creation of favorable encounters via sensory comfort and psychological satisfaction. However, recent research suggests that "interesting" and "pleasant" may constitute two fundamentally distinct types of experiences, with the former emphasizing cognitive engagement and emotional complexity, while the latter focuses on immediate emotional gratification. This study aims to explore the positive role of negative emotions in creating interesting spatial experiences. The research objectives are threefold: first, to clarify the essential differences and relationships between "interesting" and "pleasant" as core concepts; second, to analyze the mechanisms through which negative emotions function and their positive transformation pathways; and third, to explore design strategies for interesting spaces driven by negative emotions. (Method) This study employs a combined approach of literature analysis and case study methodology. The literature analysis systematically examines theoretical foundations across the fields of emotional psychology, evolutionary psychology, and spatial design, parsing the emotional compositional characteristics of "interesting" experiences. Case studies select representative examples of spatial design examples for in-depth analysis, deconstructing their emotional design strategies and extracting practical insights. The research scope focuses on public experiential spaces with clearly defined experiential design objectives, including exhibition spaces, entertainment venues, and artistic installations. The research subjects are adult populations, and all discussed negative emotions refer to controllable experiences that do not cause actual harm to users.(Results) The study reveals that being interesting is a composite psychological state encompassing cognitive evaluation, complex emotional experiences, and behavioral motivation, fundamentally different from pleasure as an immediate emotional response. These two dimensions are separable and independent psychological constructs. Negative emotions in spatial experiences can be categorized into three intensity levels: low-intensity tension, medium-intensity anxiety, and high-intensity fear. These negative emotions can be successfully transformed into positive experiences through various psychological mechanisms including cognitive reappraisal, contrast effects, and the establishment of perceived control. Further analysis demonstrates that negative emotions promote users' deep engagement by enhancing cognitive alertness, stimulating problem-solving motivation, and creating emotional complexity that enriches the overall experience.(Conclusions) Interesting spatial experiences do not necessarily require pleasure as a prerequisite; rather, moderate and controllable negative emotions constitute the key driving force for creating truly interesting spaces. Future spatial design should explore the positive potential of negative emotions within a three-layer safety framework encompassing physical safety, psychological safety, and cognitive safety. This represents a paradigm shift from simple sensory pleasure toward complex psychological participation, creating interesting spatial experiences capable of stimulating profound thinking and emotional resonance.
