‘괜찮다’의 담화 기능에 대한 한국인과 태국인 한국어 학습자의 인식 차이 연구 - 칭찬 및 사과 상황을 중심으로 -

본 연구의 목적은 ‘괜찮다’의 담화 기능에 대한 한국인과 태국인 한국어 학습자의 인식을 비교하고자 하는 것이다. 태국인 학습자들은 한국어의 '괜찮다'에 상응하는 태국어 표현인 '마이뻰라이(Mai pen rai)'로 인해 '괜찮다'의 기능을 제대로 인식하거나 올바르게 사용하는 데 어려움이 있을 것으로 예상되었다. 본고의 연구 문제는 다음과 같다: (1) 한국어 모어 화자와 태국인 한국어 학습자 간에 칭찬 상황 및 사과의 상황에서 사용하는 ‘괜찮다’의 기능에 대한 인식에 어떠한 차이가 있는가? (2) 거주지가 다른 두 집단의 태국인 한국어 학습자들 간에 칭찬 및 사과의 상황에서 사용하는 ‘괜찮다’의 기능에 대한 인식에 어떠한 차이가 있는가? 자료를 수집하기 위해서 한국어 모어 화자(KNS), 한국 거주 태국인 학습자(KSL), 태국 거주 태국인 학습자(KFL) 각각 35명으로 구성된 총 3개 집단의 피실험자를 모집하였다. 실험을 진행한 결과, KSL 집단이 '괜찮다'가 칭찬으로 사용되는 상황에서 긍정적인 평가로 더 잘 인식하여 한국어 모어 화자 집단의 인식과 가까운 양상을 보였다. 그러나 이와 같은 상황에서 두 태국인 학습자 집단의 피험자는 '괜찮다'를 사용할 의향이 없다고 응답하였다. 사과가 필요한 상황에서 ‘괜찮다’를 사용하는 경우 KNS와 태국 학습자 집단 간에 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 그러나 KSL과 KFL 집단 간의 인식에는 유의한 차이가 없는 것을 통해 거주지가 영향을 미치지 않았음을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 태국인 한국어 학습자들을 위한 ‘괜찮다’의 담화 기능에 대한 적절한 교육이 필요하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the perceptions of Korean native speakers and Thai learners of Korean regarding the discourse function of the expression ‘Gwaenchanta’. It was anticipated that Thai learners of Korean might have difficulties in recognizing or using the expression properly due to the presence of “Mai pen rai”, which is a similar expression used in Thai. The research questions are: (1) Is there a difference in perception between Korean native speakers and Thai learners of Korean regarding the use of ‘Gwaenchanta’ in the situation where it is used as a compliment and in a situation where an apology is necessary? (2) Does a Thai learners of Korean’s place of residence have influence on their perception of ‘Gwaenchanta’ in the situation where it is used as a compliment and in a situation where an apology is necessary? The data was collected from 35 participants from three groups: Korean native speakers (KNS), Thai learners of Korean residing in Korea (KSL), and Thai learners of Korean residing in Thailand (KFL). The results showed that the KSL group had a better understanding of ‘Gwaenchanta’ as a positive evaluation when used in compliments, which was similar to the perception of the Korean native speakers. However, neither Thai learners of Korean group was willing to use this expression for compliments. There was a statistically significant difference between the KNS and the Thai learners of Korean when it came to using ‘Gwaenchanta’ in the situation where apology is needed. There was no significant difference in perception between the KSL and KFL groups, indicating that place of residence did not have a significant impact. However, there was a large difference between the KNS and Thai learners of Korean. This study highlights the need for proper education on the discourse function of ‘Gwaenchanta’ for Thai learners of Korean.
