Abstract
The concept of time in Whitehead's metaphysics has three basically different levels. One of these is time in concrescence of actual occasion. This is atomic, and indivisible time, which may be called ontological. Another is physical time in the society of occasions which is continuous, and divisible. The other is abstract time which is usually used in modern physical science. Ontological time is the most fundamental, and explains the others. Further, ontological time in actual occasion is explained in terms of the Category of the Ultimate which is composed of creativity, many and one. Some of Whiteheadians have argued that creativity itself is temporal, and functions as the foundation of the concept of time in Whitehead's philosophy. But this is not true. Creativity is never temporal in Whitehead's system. It, thus, cannot explain time. It is the Category of the Ultimate that rationally analyzes and exposes ontological time in his system. Therefore, it also is incorrect to say that Whitehead merely presupposes that concept of fundamental time or temporality which is usually, but wrongly, understood as an characteristics of creativity.
