Abstract
The region of Miryang needs to be re-evaluated to recognize its significe from the perspective of the origins of Confucian scholarship in Korea. Though Jeong Mong-ju, known as the progenitor of Neo-Confucianism in the eastern provinces during the late Goryeo period, underwent a political decline during the transition to the Joseon Dynasty, his academic ideology and attitude took root in the Miryang region through Kim Jong-jik, widely referred to as the “Great Confucian Scholar of the Era,” and his disciples. In short, this is the foundation of the Sarim faction. Therefore, the historical status of Miryang, referred to as the “Zhou and Lu of Korea,” ought to be examined from this point, which will enhance understanding of the subsequent development of the Confucian scholars of Yeongnam. In this regard, it is only natural to also explore the lineage and scholarly roots of the Gwangju Kim clan, who settled in Miryang. To examine the Gwangju Kim clan in Miryang, we must begin with their settlement in the region and focus on key figures such as Yangmu-gong Kim Tae-heo (1555-1620), his nephew Gu-bong Kim Su-in (1563-1626), and Gu- bong's father Gu-ong Kim Tae-il (1530-1571) and trace the roots of their family scholarship. Key sources for this study include the three volumes of the Gwangju Kim Clan Genealogy, published in 1957 and 2015, Kim Tae-il's Gu-ong Seonsaeng Ilgo (逸稿), Kim Tae-heo's Yangmu-gong Silgi (襄武公實記), Kim Su-in's Gubong Seonsaeng Munjip (九峯先生文集), and the 1958 publication of the Gwangju Kim Clan Sego, which also includes Hae-su Seonsaeng Munjip by Kim Woo-jeong (1551-1630). By focusing on these materials, we will explore the Gwangju Kim clan's settlement in Miryang and the formation and transmission of their family scholarship, revealing an aspect of how Confucianism in the Joseon period was regionally established in Korea.
