『東野彙輯』 ｢婦女部｣에 드러난 여성에 대한 시각과 그 의미

야담 속 여성 형상화에는 사족 남성의 시선이 투영되어 있다. 그런 이야기 다수는 계보를 획득할 정도로 활발하게 향유되었다. 본고에서는 이 점에 유념하면서, 전대 야담의 주요 이야기를 집성한 東野彙輯에서 여성에 초점을 맞춘 ｢婦女部｣ 상편과 하편의 주된 경향성을 살폈다. ｢부녀부｣ 상편의 주인공은 가부장제의 직접적 영향 아래에 놓인 여성들로, 사족 남성이 저락한 사회적·경제적 처지에서 도약하기 위한 수단이자, 성적 욕망의 달성 대상으로 구체화되었다. ｢부녀부｣ 하편의 주인공은 가부장제가 설정한 家의 직접적인 영향력에서 빗겨 난 존재들이다. 그래서 주체적인 면모가 적극적으로 발휘될 수 있었다. 하지만 이들의 주체성 역시 사족 남성이 고안한 가부장제에 부합하며 제한적으로 작동하고 있다는 점에서 상편과 동일한 문법이 관철되고 있었다. 이런 ｢부녀부｣의 경향성은 보수적 야담집으로 규정되어 온 동야휘집에 대한 평가를 재고하기 위한 단서가 될 수 있다. 동야휘집은 전대 문헌과 야담을 광범위하게 포섭했고, 특히 ｢부녀부｣의 경우는 대부분 전대 야담집에서 전사한 이야기로 채워진다는 점에서 그러하다. 물론 부연이나 변개 등 예외적인 경우도 있지만, 이는 기존의 경향성을 부각하는 방향에 가깝다. 따라서 동야휘집 ｢부녀부｣에 보이는 경향성은 전대 야담에서부터 이어져 온 연속성의 차원에서 이해되어야 한다. 그렇게 되면 보수적 야담집으로 규정된 동야휘집에 대한 평가는 보편성으로 완화될 여지가 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Women in 野談 are often portrayed as figures projected through the gaze of elite men. Many of these stories were widely circulated and enjoyed, to the extent that they established their own narrative lineages. With this in mind, this paper examines the main tendencies found in the ｢婦女部｣ of 東野彙輯, a comprehensive anthology of earlier 野談 narratives, with a particular focus on the portrayal of women. The protagonists in Part I of the ｢婦女部｣ are women situated directly under the influence of the patriarchal order. They are concretized as instruments through which elite men aim to overcome their declining social and economic status, and as objects for the fulfillment of sexual desire. In contrast, the female protagonists of Part II exist somewhat outside the immediate reach of the patriarchal household structure. As such, they are able to demonstrate a greater degree of subjectivity. However, even this subjectivity operates within the constraints of the patriarchal order devised by aristocratic men. In this respect, the same underlying grammar as in Part I is maintained. This tendency observed in the ｢婦女部｣ offers a clue for re-evaluating the conventional assessment of 東野彙輯 as a conservative 野談 anthology. 東野彙輯 encompasses a wide range of earlier texts and 野談 stories, and in the case of the ｢婦女部｣, most narratives are transcribed from preceding 野談 collections. While there are exceptions involving elaborations or modifications, such instances tend to reinforce rather than deviate from existing patterns. Therefore, the tendencies found in the ｢婦女部｣ of 東野彙輯 should be understood in terms of continuity with earlier 野談 traditions. In this light, the evaluation of 東野彙輯 as a conservative work could be moderated by acknowledging its representative nature and broader relevance.
