Abstract
Background: Warm-up is considered essential for maximizing athletic performance and preventing injuries. Although previous studies have separately examined the effects of dynamic warm-up(DWU) and microwave diathermy (MWD), few have directly compared these approaches in elite athletes. Objectives: This study aimed to compare and analyze the acute effects of MWD and DWU on isokinetic strength, endurance, and knee stability (H/Q ratio) in elite male athletes. Methods: Sixty elite male athletes aged 19–24 years were randomly assigned to the MWDG(n=20), DWUG(n=20), or control group(CG, n=20). The MWDG received microwave diathermy (2.45 GHz) applied for 10 minutes each to the quadriceps and hamstrings, while the DWUG performed 20 minutes of dynamic exercises targeting the hip and knee joints. Isokinetic strength and endurance were assessed at angular velocities of 60°/sec and 180°/sec using an isokinetic dynamometer, and the H/Q ratio was calculated. Data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA with a significance level of α=0.05. Results: The MWDG showed significant improvements in isokinetic peak torque of both knee extension and flexion at 60°/sec, as well as in endurance at 180°/sec, compared with the DWUG and CG(p<0.001). Furthermore, the MWDG demonstrated significant enhancement in H/Q ratio, indicating improved knee stability. In contrast, the DWUG exhibited partial improvements in endurance but limited gains in strength. Conclusion: Passive deep-heating warm-up using MWD effectively enhanced short-term isokinetic strength, endurance, and functional knee stability in elite athletes. These findings provide evidence-based insights for optimizing pre-competition warm-up strategies and highlight the potential for field application. Future studies should consider sex, sport-specific demands, and long-term effects.
