이 연구는 학습의 결과 도달하게 되는 상태인 숙달에 관해 이해하고자 출발하였다. 이를 위해 연구자는 어느 목공장인들의 작업장을 참여 관찰하였고 분석은 민속방법론에 의존하였다. 장인이 사물을 다루는 방식을 중심으로 일의 과정을 들여다봄으로써, 장인의 작업 안에서 숙달된 상태를 가능하게 하는 조건이 무엇인지 탐색하고자 하였다. 나아가 자신들의 작업장 안에서 장인들 제각각의 실천이 어떻게 보편적 가치와 개성적인 스타일을 성취하게 되는지 보고자 하였다. 사물의 결 그리고 상황적 요구에 세심하게 반응하는 유연하고 융통성 있는 작업은 일상적이고 직관적이며 임시변통적인 변주의 연속으로 전개되었다. 장인의 면모는 그가 발휘하는 솜씨를 통해 작업대나 연장과 도구, 목재, 일감 등 객체들의 배치와 상호작용하며, 작업장이 갖는 장소감과 더불어 시간의 사용법 등 그만의 암묵지를 넘어서서 그의 삶과 생활세계에 깊숙이 스며들어가 있음을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 장인의 숙달은 그를 둘러싼 작업과 작업장이라고 하는 생활세계가 반영된 결과이고 그러한 작업장과 작업 과정 속에서 그의 정체성이 어떻게 생동하고 있는지 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 주체와 객체 간 경계의 넘나듦 양상은 경험학습에 관한 우리 이해를 확장하는 데 시사점을 줄 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
This study was initiated to understand the mastery as one of the learned states. For this purpose, craftsman’s workplace was observed by researchers and the analysis depended on ethnomethodology. By looking into the process of the work based on the manner in which the craftsman handles things, we tried to explore what conditions would enable the mastered condition in the work of the craftsman. In addition, we tried to identify how the different practices of individual craftsmen in their workplaces achieve universal values and styles. The state of flexible mastery, which reacts sensitively to the texture and contextual needs of things, is too ordinary, intuitive to be said knowledge and it is rather succession of variation. Beyond the demonstration of craftsman’s skills, the appearance of the craftsmen interacts with configuration of the objects such as workbenches, tools, timbers and work pieces and it even pervade the living and life-word including sense of place in workplace and direction for use of time. The mastery of the craftsmen reflects their work and life-world surrounding them, which is their workplace, and again the craftsmen builds their own life-world. It is expected that the boundary crossing between the subject and the object will give implications that what condition is needed for the learning and reproduction of the experience.
