Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the process and characteristics of the making of the Tamil literary canon in the late 19th century, and to consider the socio-political function of literary canon. To accomplish this, the list of authors and works included in pre-modern canon and newly formed canon have been compared and analyzed. In the new canon, religious and didactic literature, which was emphasized in pre-modern canon, was marginalized, and Caṅkam Classics with strong secular character took precedence. The making of new Tamil literary canon was carried out by erasing the traces of Sanskrit language and literature, and replacing it with Caṅkam Classics. Caṅkam Classics have become a symbol of the glorious past of the Tamil people which was not contaminated by Northern Aryan culture. Literary canon is a re-creation of the poetic meaning inherent in literature. From this perspective, future research tasks include investigating the socio-political function or possibility of change in contemporary Tamil literary canon.
