기후 위기가 심화되면서 고등교육 차원에서도 환경교육을 강화할 필요성이 점차 증가하고 있다. 동시에 학습자의 기후변화에 대한 인지적 역량과 실천적 역량을 통합적으로 함양할 수 있는 혁신적 교수법의 도입이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 아시아권 다양한 국적의 대학생들을 대상으로 문제기반학습(Problem-Based Learning)을 적용한 P 대학교에서의 기후변화 교육 수업 사례를 분석하여, 이러한 교수학습법이 학습자의 기후변화에 대한 인식, 이해, 실천 의지, 협업 및 소통 역량에 미치는 영향을 종합적으로 탐색하였다. 수업 종료 후 시행된 설문조사 결과에 따르면, 본 PBL 수업은 학습자들의 기후변화 관련 인식 및 탄소중립 정책에 대한 이해, 탄소중립 실천 의지, 문제해결력과 협업 및 소통 역량에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤음을 보여준다. 본 연구는 기후 위기 시대에 환경교육과 학습자 중심의 전환적 교수법인 PBL의 결합 가능성을 제시하는 탐색적 사례 연구라는 의미를 지닌다. 향후 보다 체계적인 연구 설계, 장기적 추적 조사 및 아시아 지역 내의 타 대학 사례와의 비교연구를 통해 본 연구의 함의를 확장할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
As the climate crisis intensifies, the need to strengthen environmental education at the higher-education level has become increasingly urgent. Simultaneously, there is a demand for innovative pedagogical approaches that can cultivate learners’ cognitive, problem-solving, and action-oriented competencies regarding climate change. This study examines a case of climate change education at P University, conducted as a hybrid problem-based learning(PBL) course with students from various Asian countries as the target learners. It explores the effects of such teaching and learning methods on learners’ awareness, understanding, and willingness to act regarding climate change, as well as on their collaborative and communicative skills. Findings from a post-course survey suggest that this PBL course positively influenced students’ climate change awareness, understanding of carbon neutrality policies, willingness to practice carbon neutrality, problem-solving skills, and collaborative and communicative competencies. As an exploratory case study, this research underscores the potential for combining environmental education with PBL, a learner-centered, transformative teaching method in the era of climate crisis. Future research should build on these findings through more systematic research designs, longitudinal approaches, and comparative analyses across universities in Asia.
