초록
This paper aims to explain how the Early Church Fathers interpreted the meaning of ‘gods’ in Psalm 82:6. The Greek Fathers maintained that the ultimate goal of humans is becoming immortal beings(‘gods’) and that the incarnation of Christ was also intended to help us ascend into ‘gods’. In contrast, the Latin Fathers believed that humans could not be the same with God in nature, because there is an unbridgeable ontological gap between the creature and the Creator. Therefore, the Latin Fathers including Tertullian interpreted Psalm 82 only with the intention of depending the divinity of Christ. Augustine inherited the Greek Fathers’ soteriological and eschatological interpretation of Psalm 82. But he argued that the ‘gods’ here are not immortal beings but merely weak creatures (i.e. beings that can be judged and die because of their sin), thereby attempting to synthesize the Greek and Latin Fathers’ interpretations of Psalm 82.
