대첩이 사용된 첫 번째 고유명사는 황산대첩으로 조선 태조의 위업을 기리기 위해서 였다. 대첩이 들어간 용어는 임진왜란을 지나며 늘어났다. 한산도, 행주, 진주 등지에 서의 승리는 대첩비로 기념되었다. 승리의 주역들에 대해 충절을 강조한 데서 알 수 있듯 당시에는 유교 가치관에 입각하여 평가하였다. 대첩이 왕조, 유교에서 벗어나 민족의 역사에서 큰 승리를 지칭하게 된 것은 1900년대 후반에 등장했고 1920년대 후반부터 굳어졌다. 고구려와 고려의 큰 승리였던 살수대첩과 귀주대첩이 대표적이 다. 마침내 해방 후 남한의 첫 교과서에서 살수대첩, 귀주대첩, 임진왜란 삼대첩, 명량 대첩이 특기되었다. 이 대첩들은 지금도 국란 극복의 상징으로 상식화되었다. 그러나 대첩은 우리의 승리와 상대의 패배가 짝 지워진 영광과 굴욕의 용어이다. 민족의 정 체성을 강조했던 한국사에서 벗어나 다양성을 존중하고 평화의 국제관계를 추구하 는 추세에 맞추어 대첩은 보다 중립적인 용어로 대체되거나 신중하게 사용되어야 한 다. 상식화된 역사용어 대첩들은 ‘이민족의 침략에 대항하여 거둔 큰 승리’를 기준으 로 고정되어야 하고, 사용 역시 국가 내로 국한해야 한다.
Abstract
The first proper noun combined daecheop was the Hwangsan-daecheop to commemorate the feat of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty. The terms containing daecheop increased throughout the Imjin War. Victories in Hansan Island, Haengju, Jinju, etc. were commemorated with the Daecheop- monuments. Because of the emphasis on loyalty to the victors, we can see that it was evaluated based on Confucian values at the time. It emerged in the late 1900s that daecheop came to refer to a great victory in the history of the nation away from the dynasty and Confucianism and was solidified from the late 1920s. The Salsu-daecheop of Goguryeo and the Guizu-daecheop of Goryeo are representative. Finally, in South Korea’s first textbook after liberation, the Salsu-daecheop, the Guizu-daecheop, the three Daecheops of Imjin War, and the Myeongnyang-daecheop were specialized. These Daecheops are still commonly known as symbols of overcoming the national crisis. However, daecheop is a term of glory and humiliation that combines our victory and our opponent’s defeat. If we move away from Korean history which emphasized national identity and follow the trend of respecting diversity and pursuing international relations of peace, daecheop should be replaced with more neutral terms or used carefully. The daecheop terms used in common sense should be fixed only in the case of a big victory against invasion of other nations and their use should also be made only in Korea.
