Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine the properties of modern adventure novels as thecultural texts of popular and school geographies, and to explore their roles and implications forgeography education. For this, the article first explains the properties and relations of popular geographyand adventure novels, both of which are imperialistic legacies, in relation to school geography. Then itlooks at Jules Verne’s literary and geographical interest and suggests the roles and implications of hisadventure novel Around the World in Eighty Daysfor geography education, which can be summarized asfollows. Firstly, the novel can be used as a useful cultural text through which students have knowledge onthe changing geography of the 19th century’s world, and have interest in geography. Secondly, however itcan reproduce Orientalism’s ‘imaginative geographies’ with Eurocentric discourses and representations. Finally, nevertheless what I want to emphasize is that through critically reading the novel in terms of post-colonialism it can be possible to perceive such ‘imaginative geographies’, translate them into ‘criticalgeographies’ and overcome the ‘Orientalism within us’.
