Abstract
Using post-colonialism as a major theoretical framework, this study investigates how Asia is taught in American classrooms, what kinds of notions and imaginations of Asia are produced, and what socio-cultural assumptions are underlying the curriculum on teachings about Asia. To address these questions, a qualitative study was conducted in two secondary social studies classrooms. Major findings show that Asia is more like a symbol than a fixed physical entity, and its meaning varies according to ethnic, historical, cultural, and economic contexts. It also turns out that Japan and China tends to represent Asia while Asians as a whole are likely to be perceived as strange, mysterious and scary people. Based on these findings, this study argues that rethinking how to bring other cultures and societies into school curriculums and how to connect students with people who look different are important tasks not only for American teachers but also for Korean teachers. In particular, it urges that educators need to deconstruct colonial legacies in the curriculum about others.
