시설 청소년들의 문화에 대한 현상학적 연구

초록

본 연구에서는 현상학적 방법을 사용하여,‘아동양육시설’에서 생활하는 청소년들이 공유하거나 생산해가는 문화를 있는 그대로 드러내어 그들의 생활세계를 이해하려고 하였다. 이를 위해 연구자는 5명의 시설 청소년들, 2명의 시설 관계자들과 심층면담을 수행하였고, 수집한 자료는 van Manen(1998)의 해석학적 현상학의 방법적 절차를 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시설 청소년들은 원가정과 부모에 대한 왜곡된 신념과 기대를 가지고 있었으나 시간이 지나면서 왜곡된 가족 신화를 깨뜨리고 현재의 자신을 있는 그대로 받아들이게 된다. 둘째, 시설 청소년들은 자신들을 위한 보호와 통제의 경계에서 혼란스러워하지만, 과도기를 거치면서 시설이 자신들을 안전하게 지켜주는 울타리라는 것을 알아가게 된다. 셋째, 다양한 개성을 지닌 청소년들은 공동체 생활을 통해 여러 가지 경험을 하며, 건강한 의사소통 방식을 배우며 성장한다. 넷째, 시설 청소년들은 자신이 시설에서 살고 있다는 사실이 알려질까 봐 전전긍긍하면서도 시설에서 살고 있는 자신의 소속이 명확하게 드러나는 후원 행사는 빠지지 않고 참석하는 대조적인 모습을 보인다. 마지막으로 본 연구에서 확인한 ‘성장통’과 ‘울타리와 공간’이라는 시설 청소년 문화의 의미와 함께 자아 정체감 형성과 같은 청소년기 발달 과업 수행, 안전한 경계 설정, 권리와 책임 교육 등을 통해 시설 청소년들이 건강한 성인으로 성장하기 위한 실천적 방안을 제언하였다.

Abstract

In this study, using the phenomenological method, we tried to understand their living world by revealing the culture shared or produced by teenagers living in residential care center as it is. To this end, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with five facility adolescents and two facility officials, and the collected data were analyzed according to the methodological procedure of the analytical phenomenology of van Manen (1998). The research results are as follows. First, the youth in the facility had distorted beliefs and expectations for the original family and parents. Over time, they break distorted family myths and accept themselves as they are. Second, facility adolescents are confused at the boundary of protection and control for themselves. As they go through the transition period, they realize that the facility is a fence that keeps them safe. Third, adolescents with diverse personalities experience various experiences through community life, learn healthy communication methods, and grow. Fourth, youth at the facility are in contrast to attend sponsorship events that clearly reveal their affiliation living in the facility, even though they are worried that they will be known that they are living in the facility. Finally, in this study, the meaning of the facility youth culture of ‘growth pain’ and‘boundary and space’ was confirmed. In addition, practical measures were suggested for facility adolescents to grow into healthy adults through performing adolescent development tasks such as forming ego identity, setting safe boundaries, and education on rights and responsibilities.
