New Morphemes and the Emergence of the Unmarkedness

It has been noticed that non-morphemic, recurring parts of blends develop into new morphemes or splinters. Examples are -(a)holic and -(a)thon in English and [pharachi] in [s’ɨpharachi] and [phia] in [kwanphia] in Korean. In this paper, I examine splinters in Korean and show that they are regulated by a constraint on the morpheme shape; a morpheme to be at least a (CV) syllable. I argue this is due to the low-ranked alignment constraint, whose effect emerges in brand new morphemes, since they are not regulated by faithfulness constraints. I propose that the emergence of new morphemes present a case of the emergence of the unmarkedness (TETU) in Korean phonology and morphology. To support TETU, I provide evidence from morphological processes such as the Consonant Copy in Jeju Dialect and partial reduplication in Korean.
