불교의 의례연구는 서구의 의례 연구이론의 발달과 맥을 같이 한다. 그렇기에 서구의 불교의례 연구에 대해서 논하기 위해서는 이에 대한 검토가 선행되어야 한다. 1970년대 이전에는 의례자체보다 의례와 신화, 의례와 사회의 관계에 대한 연구가주를 이루었고, 이후부터 의례에 대한 관심이 높아져서 의례가 갖는 의미보다는 의례를 구성하는 요소들, 의례를 집행하는 이, 의례 도구, 의례 구성 등에 대한 다양한연구가 진행되었다. 의례연구의 방향은 의례의 사회적 역사적 의미 연구에서, 의례 전체를 다루는 방향으로 연구범위가 확대되는 쪽으로 가고 있다. 의례 자체를 다루는 연구가 이루어지다보니, 의례에 대한 텍스트보다는 의례행위와 몸에 대한 연구가 많이 이루어지고 있다. 또한 추상적이고 이론적인 연구 보다는 구체적이고 개별 사례에 집중하는연구로 나아가고 있다. 종합적으로는 의례의 보편적 특성을 구성하는 거대담론보다는 개별 의례의 독자적 특징에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 연구 방향의 맥락에서 로날드 그림스는 의례 행위에 초점을 맞추어 독특한 여섯개의 범주를 제시하며 이를 활용해서 기독교적 행위와 선불교의 수행행위를 비교하거나, 선불교의 행위들을 의례로 보아 분석하고 있다. 그가 제시한 여섯 가지 범주는 다섯 가지는 의례화(Ritualization), 예법(Decorum), 예식(Ceremony), 마법(Magic), 전례(Liturgy), 축하의식(Celebration)이다. 다른 학자들이 선불교의 수행행위 속에서 의례라 불릴만한 것에 초점을 맞추어 사례를 분석하고자 했다면, 로버트 샤프는의례란 무엇인가라는 질문을 던지며, 의례의 정의를 새롭게 함으로서 불교의 의례의 범위를 확장시키고 선불교의 수행행위를 의례에 포함시킬 수 있는 이론적 근거를 제공하였다. 서구에서의 불교의례 연구는 이처럼 의례 연구의 방향성의 변화에 따라 현재는개별지역의 의례 행위에 대한 연구, 나아가 불교의 수행을 의례의 하나의 형태로 보고 연구하고 있다. 또한 의례 전체를 다루는 연구가 다각도에서 진행되다 보니, 학제적 연구의 필요성도 점점 더 공감을 얻어가고 있다.
Abstract
This article introduces the discourse of the Buddhist ritual studies in the west to contribute to the establishment of Buddhist ritual studies in Korea. Buddhist ritual studies are closely connected to the development of ritual studies in the west, so this article begins with the theories of ritual studies. The direction of the ritual studies changes from digging into the unrevealed meaning of the ritual to study ritual itself as a kind of performance. As Robert Sharf indicated, scholars now first ask what & how people do in ritual rather than its meaning. In addition, the scholars focus more on studying individual rituals than finding common characteristics of all rituals. In this context, Buddhist ritual studies also focus more on ritual action, then spontaneously it flows to look for the ritual elements in Zen Buddhism. Ronald Grimes uses his six modes – Ritualization, Decorum, Ceremony, Magic, Liturgy, Celebration- to analyze Zen practice actions such as breathing, bowing, hitting, clinging, sitting, enlightenment. Robert Sharf defines ritual in a broad way to embrace the Zen practice action into the ritual. With those efforts, Buddhist ritual studies in the west can study more subjects in ritual studies.
