Abstract

In the 21st general election campaign, social media played an important role due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examines the relationship between party members' social media use and online political participation using survey data from “the 2020 Party Members’ Attitudes toward Political Parties and Social Integration”. The results show that the more conservative party members are, the more interested they are in the 21st general election, the more selective they tend to expose political information, and the longer the average daily time they use social media, the more likely they are to communicate and interact only with like-minded people. These results support the fact that when party members trust and share information similar to their ideas and opinions within the Internet community or social media networks, they tend to reinforce the confirmation bias due to selective exposure and, consequently, lead to political polarization.
