이 논문은 서기전 5세기에서 3세기 사이에 활동했던 메가라학파의 변증술에 관한 연구이다. 메가라학파는 견유학파, 퀴레네학파와 함께 이른바 소(小) 소크라테스학파의 하나로 알려져 있다. 학파의 설립자는 에우클레이데스로 그는 스승인 소크라테스의 철학적 문답법과 변증술을 발전시켰다. 그런 이유로 메가라학파의 철학자들은 변증가들, 쟁론가들, 혹은 소피스트들이라는 이름을 얻게 되었다. 이러한 배경 때문인지 철학사 서술의 전통에 따르면, 메가라학파는 파르메니데스나 제논과 같은 엘레아 철학자들의 아류이거나, 아니면 소크라테스적 변증술을 극단적으로 전개한 사람들이라는 평가를 받아왔다. 그러나 이 논문에서는 메가라 철학자들이 전개한 변증술에는 단순한 방법론 이상의 철학적 목표와 의도를 담고 있음을 보여주고자 한다. 즉 메가라학파에 관한 증언들의 비교, 분석을 통해서 그들의 변증술과 쟁론술이 이중적인 면을 갖고 있음을 보게 될 것다. 한편으로 그것은 상대의 주장을 논박하는 파괴적인 성격을 지닌 반면, 다른 한편으로는 감각 세계의 불확실성과 함께, 감각 경험을 통해서는 세계에 대한 확실한 앎을 얻을 수 없다는 경고의 기능을 가지고 있다. 결국 이러한 경고를 통해서 메가라 철학자들은 모든 감각 경험을 배재한 채 오직 이성의 인도를 통해서만 진리에 도달할 수 있음을 알리고자 했던 것이다.
Abstract
The aim of this study is to reveal the nature of dialectical practise of Megaric school at 5th to 3rd centuries BCE. It is well known that, with the Cynics and the Cyrenaics, the Megarics are one of the Minor Socratics established after the death of Socrates. The founder of School is Euclid of Megara. Being fascinated by the Socratic use of dialectic, he devoted himself to developing dialectical refutations. That is the reason why the Megarics were called as “dialecticians,” “eristics,” or “sophists.” Throughout the history of philosophy, the Megarics have been estimated in two ways: some historians of philosophy consider the Megarics as the Epigonois of Eleatic School; others think that the Megaric philosophy was an extreme examples of Socratic dialectic. But a careful reading of ancient testimonies shows that the dialectics of the Megaric school contain something more than just a methodical practise: on the one hand, the Megaric dialectic has a destructive characteristics just as eristic or antilogy; on the other hand, it plays an important role, i.e. the warning of the weakness of sense-perception. We cannot obtain any certain knowledge by way of sense-experiences; it is only the reason by which we can access to the realm of truth.
