Abstract

This study aims to analyze the way women articulate their experiences and scars from the calamity of literati, focusing on the records of Mrs. Kim as documented in Gyeonglam. It seeks to reveal the perception of life and the meaning of recording these experiences. In Mrs. Kim's upbringing, a woman's learning and writing were regarded as commendable abilities. This background allowed Mrs. Kim to voice opinions that were worth listening to and trustworthy, even within the limited scope of her household, holding some influence. Mrs. Kim confessed her own immature and lacking conduct in contrast to her sister's highly valued contributions during the political strife, which helped the family through their crisis. Praise and admiration for normative women often caused shame and guilt in those women who did not meet those standards. Mrs. Kim sought to understand the events by attributing the cause of the unavoidable disaster to herself, aiming to fulfill her responsibility for the guilt through self-denial. Her writing became a way of accepting the absurdities of life. However, Mrs. Kim did not remain in self-denial. She found the basis for enduring various trials in the political solidarity and emotional support from her family, seeking the restoration of her household. The memorials and wills she wrote were both expressions of self-denial and declarations of her descendants' will to survive. This paradoxical writing was a necessary strategy for a woman who had endured the calamity of literati repeatedly, as it was a declaration chosen to accept her life, secure the meaning of survival, and forge change. This is why Mrs. Kim's writings were included in Gyeonglam as records that should be read by the family for generations.
