Abstract
Jewangungi(帝王韻紀) and Binwangrok(貧王錄) are Lee Seunghyu's works and have very important value. Through those two writings, Lee Seunghyu must have wanted to tell many stories. For that reason, many scholars were able to produce good research results on it. Lee Seunghyu is a person who lived through a period of upheaval. During his youth, he may have xperienced the Mongol invasion and perceived Mongolia as hostile, and such perception may have been maintained until the age of 40(1263), when he went to Samcheok to see his mother after passing the civil service exam and stayed in Samcheok due to the Mongol invasion. However, Lee Seunghyu had a great experience when he visited the Yuan Dynasty as an envoy in 1273 at the age of 50. Unlike before, he accepted the Yuan Dynasty as a definite superior country. Regardless of that, even at the age of 57, he showed himself as a strong subject who criticized the politics of King Chungnyeol's close associates. However, the results for individual politician Lee Seunghyu were disastrous. He was dismissed from his job and began an indefinite life of seclusion in Samcheok, far away from Gaegyeong. Jewangungi and Binwangrok are works compiled 7 and 10 years after his retirement, respectively. Previous studies have generally explained that Lee Seunghyu composed Jewangungi with the intention of admonishing King Chungnyeol to implement Confucian-style political reforms, and they have tended to evaluate Lee Seunghyu’s perception of domestic politics in his time in a positive light. However, an analysis of the text reveals that, in addition to such positive aspects, Lee Seunghyu also expressed his personal desire to return to government service while refraining from criticizing the ongoing dominance of royal retainers around King Chungnyeol. Lee Seunghyu's political awareness shown in Binwangrok states that his political behavior when he was dismissed was unjustified, and it can also be seen that he hoped that his political aspirations would be reflected in politics, and Goryeo politics was influenced by the Yuan Dynasty. There was a recognition that it should be done under those who do. And I think that Binwangrok also contains the deep regret that the wish he had while compiling Jewangungi and dedicating it to King Chungnyeol was not realized. In the Binwangrok, Lee Seunghyu’s perception that Goryeo’s politics ought to operate under a relationship of subordination to the Yuan dynasty is reaffirmed. Furthermore, he conveys his belief that the political conduct surrounding his own dismissal had been unjust, and he hints at his hope that his political ideals might eventually be reflected in state affairs. Binwangrok also seems to contain a poignant sense of regret that the aspirations he had cherished when presenting Jewangungi to King Chungnyeol had not been realized. In addition, the writings ‘Bokwangjeonggi(葆光亭記)’ and ‘Ganjangsgi(看藏寺記)’, both composed around the time of Binwangrok, show no trace of criticism toward the contemporary political situation; rather, they solely express loyalty toward the king. Nevertheless, he was given a chance to be appointed by King Chungseon, but when the king was soon dethroned, Lee Seunghyu’s official career—and indeed his life—came to an end.
