'매화전'의 대중소설적 성격 연구

이 연구는 새로운 자료로 판단되는 국립한글박물관 소장 42장본 <양유전이라>를 자료로 하여 <매화전>의 대중소설적 성격을 밝히고자 하였다. 이 연구는 새 자료를 소개하고, <매화전>이라는 작품군의 주요 성격을 대중성으로 분석하는 의의를 지닌다. <매화전>은 초기 연구에서 판소리계 소설의 하나로 주목받았으나, 이후 애정소설, 도선소설, 판소리계 소설 등의 다양한 유형이 복합적으로 나타난다는 것이 논의되었다. 이 연구는 이를 바탕으로 <매화전>이 지닌 대중소설적 성격을 중심으로 논의하였다. <매화전>에서 대중성이 구현되는 양상은 1)기존 고전소설의 수용을 통한 친숙함 강화, 2)사건 제시의 폭력성과 선정성 강화, 3)공모를 통한 흥미 강화 등으로 정리하였다. <매화전>에서 기존의 고전소설이 수용되는 양상은 다양한 소설 유형이 중첩되어 나타나면서도 각 유형의 전형에서 벗어나는 것으로 드러난다. 또한 <매화전>의 서사 구조로 볼 때 <숙향전>과 유사하게 남녀 주인공의 서사가 병렬적으로 전개되면서 대립적 공간 배치가 두드러지는 특성이 나타난다. 그리고 <매화전>의 전반적인 서사 전개와는 관련 없는 임진왜란과 병자호란 시기의 인물을 언급하고 시대적 배경으로 도입하여 대중성을 확보하고 있다. <매화전>의 대중성을 독자와 관련지어 다음과 같은 의미를 찾을 수 있었다. <매화전>의 대중소설적 특성은 조선시대를 지나 일제강점기, 근대 시기를 거치며 고전소설이 어떻게 자리 잡고 가는지를 파악할 수 있는 바탕이 된다. 그리고 <매화전>은 고전소설 향유의 역사 속에서 소설의 발전사가 어떻게 전개되는지, 새로운 시대 근대를 맞아 어떠한 방식으로 독자 대중의 관심을 얻고 있는지를 보여주는 단서라는 의미가 있다.
Abstract
This study examines the characteristics of MaeWhaJeon as a popular novel based on YangYuJeonIRa, which has 42 pages and is exhibited in the National Museum of Korea, as well as being available in a new data format. Therefore, this study would be significant in that introduces a new version of MaeWhaJeon that enables the analysis of its main characteristics from the perspective of public appeal. In earlier studies, MaeWhaJeon has been highlighted as a Pansori novel. Later, some studies revealed that the novel exhibits the characteristics of multiple genres, such as romance, Toistic hermit, and Pansori. This study examines characteristics of MaeWhaJeon as a popular novel, by accepting the diverse perspectives highlighted by research to date. The popular appeals from MaeWhaJeon are to 1)build familiarity with people by accepting the existence of different classical novels, 2)develop violence and sexual expression to present event, and 3)enhance interest through conspiracy. The combination with the existing classical novels in MaeWhaJeon could be duplication with a variety of novels and could be out of typical flow from each type of a classical novel. In terms of its descriptive structure, MaeWhaJeon is similar to SookHangJeon. The two main female and male characters are parallelly deployed and reflect an opposite spatial arrangement. MaeWhaJeon appeals to the popularity by referring to a real people in the times between Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 the Manchu war of 1636 although the story has no connection with the descriptive structure. This study reveals the aspects of MaeWhaJeon that make the story appealing to its readers. Clarifying the characteristics of MaeWhaJeon that make it a popular novel enables us to understand how classical novels settle to readers through the Joseon Dynasty era, Japanese occupation, and modern times. MaeWhaJeon provides hints to understand how classical novels attract readers’ interests during modern times, and how these novels develop over the times during which readers had enjoyed reading them.
