Abstract

This study analyzes Korean picture books on the Korean War published since the 2000s. State violence constitutes a central element of the Korean War, having fundamentally disrupted the lives of individuals and communities; therefore, examining how such violence is represented in children’s and youth literature is crucial. Conveying the meaning of the war and the structure of violence to younger generations is especially vital for sustaining historical memory and fostering democratic values. This study analyzed works including 『Onyangi』, 『The Old Wish of the Big Tiled House』, 『Our Brother』, 『To Mother』, 『My Grandfather Was a Fifteen-Year-Old Soldier』, 『That Day, June 25』, and 『Moon Jar』. T he analysis confirmed that war and state violence are represented through the perspective of young narrators across multiple dimensions, including everyday trauma, psychological burden, family disintegration, and violations of human dignity. In particular, these works do not present the war merely as a historical event, but intricately depict how structural violence by state power and its effects persist across generations. By employing visual and narrative devices that enable young readers to naturally reflect on the nature of violence, ethical responsibility, and the significance of communal solidarity, it is evident that picture books function as a medium for reinterpreting the memory of the Korean War and conveying the importance of democratic values and human dignity to children and adolescents. In this regard, the study demonstrates that picture books go beyond mere historical representation, serving as meaningful educational and literary tools that help readers understand the structural and psychological impacts of war and state violence, while fostering reflection on human dignity and social responsibility.
