Abstract

This thesis is the writing analyzing how to try to establish the grade of rank between characters in the gangster movie of Korea through ‘the food’. Th e food is served as the important preference of human society as it is the important thing directly connected to the human survival. So therefore, it is utilized diversely in the art like the literature, becomes to be the means conveying a lot of meanings to persons who see it. What is noted especially in this thesis is Friend and Nameless Gangster out of those as the gangster movie of Korea. Two movies are works that not only reveal strongly the locality called Busan out of gangster movies of Korea, but also are the work utilizing the food as the cinematic device positively. Characters composed of patriarchal vertical relationship appear in the gangster movie of Korea, the relationship of characters is exposed through whether or not meals are accompanied or the attitude, the personality of character appears through the character of food. Characters of movie eat the food together when they become to regard each other as the member of community of destiny. And, on the contrary, they don’t share the food and get out of meal space to refuse the relationship with them; the space of meal becomes to be separated owing to the strong order of rank. Th e food that appears in Friend and Nameless Gangster not only reveals the locality of Busan, but also becomes to be the eff ective symbol showing the Personality Trait of character called ‘the gangster’. Characters eat chitterlings, sliced raw fi sh and hagfi sh, these all are the famous specialty of Busan. At the same time it is the intestines, also coarsely cooked ingredients (or uncooked) on the spot by killing the alive fi sh. Th e characteristic of these foods may expose directly the primitive and violent brutality that the character has. The regional characteristic called the port city of Busan exposes eff ectively well through the symbol called the food in the movie interlocking with the personality of character called the gangster moving with the strong order of rank.
