Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the realistic features of “Don Quijote”, which is the start of Spanish Modern Literature, using, ‘evidence’ which is one of rhetorical figures. The reason why ‘evidence’ was chosen as the main theme is because it was judged that the realistic effects it produces must be related to the artistic outlook pursued by Spanish Golden Age literature. There have been studies conducted by numerous scholars on the realistic characteristics of Don Quijote, which opened the door to modern Spanish novels while attempting to break down from literature in the Middle Ages. However, as one of Spain's most eminent scholars Luisa Lopez Grigera indicated, not many studies of ‘evidence’ have been completed although this rhetorical metaphor appeals in the Golden Age picaresque novels. We used the rhetorical concept of ‘evidence’ to find out what the difference is between the first and the second volumes of the description of women in Don Quijote. To this end, this study looked at how Don Quijote’s eternal muse Dulcinea was described in the first and the second volumes, and how each of these women was portrayed, including Dorotea, who plays the most intelligent and main role in the first volume, and Maritornes, who is constantly mentioned throughout the work, although she is a maid working in the guest house. Also the study looked at how each of these women is portrayed in the work, with the Dulcinea, who is responsible for planning a large part of the entire story.
