초록

The title of this article is not only a direct allusion to the famous work by Eric J. Hobsbawm , The Age of Extremes : The Short Twentieth Century, published in 1994, but the article itself is also an evocation of the work of the late Emanuele Narducci who, in a short essay published in 2001, proposed an interesting way of looking at Cicero’s life: Cicerone nel « secolo brève » . Impressed by the political violence that marked Cicero’s century, Narducci borrowed from E. Hobsbawm the temporal concept of the « short century », transposing it to the first century B.C.. In both of these cases, the spirit of the century is that of war, violence and proscription. By drawing this ingenious parallel, Narducci suggested a new way to consider the reception of Cicero’s works. In this article we shall be looking at the parallel from the opposite side and examining the reception of Cicero’s works in the « century of extremes ».
