Abstract
The development of digital technology is one of factors that accelerate the change of society. These changes in environment and demand requires “digital literacy”, a set of competencies and usage that depends on one’s respective field. Due to the growing amount of digital technology and people’s increasing dependence on that, privacy should be considered as a vital factor in contemporary digital society. We evaluated the mediated moderation effect of privacy concerns on digital literacy, while taking the relationship between first-level digital literacy and second-level digital literacy into account. The research analyzed 8,053 sample longitudinal data based on the ‘Korean Media Panel Survey' from 2014 to 2016. The results showed that first-level digital literacy has a significant effect on overall second-level digital literacy, skill and use. In addition, privacy concerns did moderate mediation effects of the relationship between first-level digital literacy and second-level digital literacy. Specifically, while privacy concerns enhance the relationship between user’s access and level of digital use, the effects of the relationship between access and digital skill is questionable. This results confirmed a “privacy paradox”. Here, the paradox refers to the situation in which people use more digital services even though they feel significant privacy risks. The study identifies the theoretical foundations of digital literacy and privacy concerns Also, the findings of this study can provide empirical evidence to better understand the privacy paradox.
