Abstract

This study employs a critical discourse analysis of prize-winning works from a national contest to examine how North Korean defectors’ experiences of defection and settlement are discursively reconfigured. The contest, as an institutionalized discursive space, marginalizes individual life stories while producing standardized narratives that center on the settlement process in South Korea. ‘Successful settlement’ is defined as overcoming initial hardships of settlement through government support programs and achieving economic self-reliance. Within these structural conditions, North Korean defectors adopt dominant discourses, yet some re-signify their defection and settlement experiences to articulate their own voices. Through reflections on self and community, they overcome trauma from the defection process, present personal growth, and articulate new meanings of settlement and integration centered on the value of labor and cultural identity. This demonstrates that North Korean defectors embody complex forms of agency that cannot be fully captured by policy discourses. The study suggests that transforming social perceptions of minorities requires inclusive discursive spaces that ensure recognition of diverse experiences and distinct identities.
