Abstract

This study investigates how changes in Raffaello Sanzio’s (1483–1520) glaze-centered procedures between 1505 and 1510 affected the optical expressivity of his paintings. Grounded in the Flemish oil tradition and in Florentine and Roman practice, Raphael assimilated Leonardo’s sfumato and chiaroscuro within a glazing regime, integrating them into a distinctive pictorial idiom. Accordingly, the research analyzes an early work executed in this manner—Ansidei Madonna (1505)—together with a transitional work—Garvagh Madonna (1510)—and couples this with experiments that vary the number and thickness of glaze layers and the painting medium, in order to examine the roles and processes by which his glazing modulated color difference and gloss. By objectifying the effects of glazing—an area seldom addressed in Korean art education—through combined work analysis and experiment, the study aims to propose avenues for expanding contemporary artistic practice not only through the technique itself but through process-based applications. Methodologically, the project first reviews prior scholarship on the historical background of sixteenth-century Italian oil technique and pictorial practice centered on Florence. It then draws on the National Gallery, London’s 2022 Mellon Digital Documentation Project for Ansidei Madonna and Garvagh Madonna, consulting records of infrared reflectography (IRR), cross-sections, microscopy, and medium analysis to reconstruct stratigraphy and to compare glazing procedures through experimental replication. Supplementary experiments restricted to a limited variable set (1–3 glaze applications; medium L [linseed oil] vs. S [linseed-based mixed medium]) are conducted; increases observed in gloss and color difference across the indicators broadly accord with the DDP findings. Moreover, the multilayer glazing observed in the Garvagh Madonna heightens gloss and color difference, and within the translucency-induced diffusion of color, produces a greater variety of chromatic gradations. By rearticulating the concept of oil-painting glazing through Raphael’s practice and presenting changes in glaze handling via quantitative indices and stratigraphic analysis, this study proposes steps toward standardization in Korean research on painting technique.
