Abstract
This paper aims to re-examine Caravaggio's artistic genius and historical significance by exploring the hypothesis proposed by David Hockney regarding Caravaggio's possible use of the camera obscura. In particular, this study is based on the research of Roberta Lapucci, who has analyzed the traces of optical techniques in Caravaggio’s works and the ongoing debate within the academic community regarding the possibility of camera obscura usage. Notably, Caravaggio’s works created in Malta display distinct differences in composition and chiaroscuro compared to his earlier works, suggesting that the absence of technical aids such as the camera obscura may have contributed to these variations. The need for this research arises from the ongoing debate within the art historical community regarding whether the use of the camera obscura influenced the evaluation of Caravaggio's artistic merit. This study analyzes the possibility of Caravaggio’s use of optical tools in his major works and examines the originality of his techniques and style by comparing them with those of his contemporaries and later artists. Additionally, this paper considers the influence of scientific tools on artistic creation from a historical perspective, with particular reference to Lapucci’s findings on the relationship between Caravaggio’s technique and the application of optical devices. The findings suggest that while the camera obscura may have been employed in Caravaggio’s artistic process, it does not undermine his artistic genius but rather reinforces his pioneering role in merging science and art. Caravaggio, as a forerunner of naturalism and Baroque art, exerted a profound influence on art history through his vivid use of natural light and innovative style. His artistic achievements hold timeless value, irrespective of the use of scientific tools. This study, grounded in Lapucci’s research, aims to open new perspectives in art history by reevaluating Caravaggio's artistic methods and his relationship with scientific tools.
