Abstract

This study is based on a socioeconomic perspective on how religion influences job choice. After socialist states in mainland Southeast Asia countries implemented economic reforms and open market polices, their economic performance and growth became comparable to the newly industrialized countries in East Asia. The gravitation of population toward the cities, changing of Agricultural industries to growth in manufacture and service sectors are all similarities to pre-industrial processes in other Asian countries. Despite these changes, the labor market growth of Phnom Penh is a passive one compared to other countries. In the long term, because the labor market strongly impacts national development, this area needs to be investigated from socioeconomic perspective, especially the reasons to why there are passive changes in the labor market compared to economic growth. This paper closely examines religious factors and how it has influenced politics, the economy, society and culture for over hundreds of years. Under this social condition, this research looks at how religious factors have influenced job choice. This research targets socialist country, a country under a market system, with rapid economic growth and a country embracing Theravada Buddhism. Cambodia has been reformed as an open market policy state since 1987 and for the past ten years has achieved more than 7 percent of economic growth rate as well as being a Theravada Buddhist state. The method of this study implements field research and the results indicate that the impact of religion affects job choice. Observing from a long-term national economic growth perspective, the religious impact on job choice will show effects on labor market inflexibility.
