라오스 불교의 세속적 영향력에 대한 사례연구 - 위앙짠 지역중심

라오스는 식민지배, 독립 그리고 사회주의 체제 등 다양한 경험을 거친 후에 20세기 중반에 개혁개방을 선언하고 시장경제를 도입했다. 그러나 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 몇 차례의 정치적 변화를 겪으면서도 라오스 사회에서 불교 사원의 영향력은 여전히 건재하다. 예를 들어, 마을 사람들은 생로병사와 관련된 모든 문제를 사원과 논의하고 있으며, 세속적 삶에서 요구되는 정보를 사원으로부터 기대한다. 라오스 불교는 공덕이라는 기재를 통해서 사원과 마을, 사원과 개인의 관계 형성에 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 연구는 라오스 불교의 세속적 영향력을 개인과 불교지도간의 관계에서 파악하고자 위앙짠 지역을 중심으로 개인의 직업선택과정에서 불교지도자의 개입여부를 조사했다. 조사방법은 위앙짠 3개 지역에 걸쳐 지역별로 100명씩을 무작위로 선정한 후설문 및 심층면접을 실시하고, 그 결과를 SPSS를 활용해서 빈도 및 상관성 분석을했다. 그 결과, 이 지역에서는 개인이 직업을 선택하면서 시장의 기능보다는 불교지도자의 자문에 더 의존하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
After having experiences such as colonial system, independence and socialism, Laos declared reform and open door policy in the mid-20th century and introduced a market economy. Despite having gone through various experiences, the temple still retains a strong influence on Lao society. For example, villagers constantly try to discuss all biological problems (of life, age, sickness, and death) with the religious leaders of the temple. Also, the temple and religious leaders build up fundamental relationships with the villagers through education. This study attempted to prove the social influences of the temple through the religious leaders’ involvement in choice of job for individual. The research was conducted by randomly selected samples of 300 people at Vientiane, Laos and used questionnaires and interviews to produce raw data. The results were analyzed using frequency and correlation using SPSS. The result showed that the people in this region were more dependent on counseling of Buddhist leaders than market in choosing a job.
