Abstract

Contra Legem Sarracenorum is a document that Riccoldo(Riccoldo da Monte di Croce, 1243-1320), a Catholic missaionary as a Dominican friar, while staying in Baghdad in Il-Khanid dynasty, directly read the Qur’an written in Arabic, and logically criticized it based on medieval scholasticism. In other words, it has an important historical value as the first document of Catholic theologians of the Middle Ages who recognized the mutual difference between Christianity and Islam and presented the logical expression. Contra Legem Sarracenorum is his subjective judgment based on the knowledge he has accumulated by directly reading the original text of the Quran, written in Arabic without expressing the popular prejudice against Islam. His critical arguments based on medieval scholasticism is like a systematic catechism. His critical analysis of Islam as the religion of Saracens in Contra Legem Sarracenorumcan be seen as providing a fundamental framework of interpretation for the traditional christian prerception of Islam. Furthermore, Contra Legem Sarracenorum can present the important examples of civilizations exchange between Christianity in medieval Europe and Islam in the Middle East and provide an important original materials for the study of the history of the relationships between Christians and Muslims during the Pax Mongolica.
