(The Face in the Mist)』을 분석하여 헐버트의 삼성신화 연구와 기존의 관련 연구를 비교 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다.
Abstract
This study analyzes Homer Bezaleel Hulbert’s novel The Face in the Mist with the aim of comparing his interpretation of Samseong myth with existing scholarship on the subject. The research focuses on Hulbert’s exploration of Samseong myth and Korean academic studies on both Dangun myth and Samseong myth. Hulbert reflected a Christian worldview into his interpretations of the Dangun myth, and the Samseong myth of Jeju Island. This paper examines how Hulbert’s worldview is reflected in his literary work, and highlights the key differences between his interpretations and those found in prior research. The methodology consists of three primary approaches. First, a comparative literary analysis is conducted to examine distinctions between Hulbert’s work and domestic studies on Dangun and Samseong myth. Second, the study evaluates Hulbert’s comparative linguistic hypothesis on the phonological, etymological, and syntactic similarities between the southern dialect of the Korean Peninsula and the Dravidian languages. Finally, a narrative analysis of The Face in the Mist is performed to explore the points that the Korean collective memories meet the western worldview. From a Western perspective, Hulbert expanded the scope of mythological reflection on Samseong myth. However, this study seeks to address the lack of research on Jeju’s maritime culture and expand the existing Hulbert’s discussion. By reexamining existing studies on the Samseong myth through the discourse of Hulbert, this study suggests the possibility of moving beyond domestically centered mythological research toward a more international and interdisciplinary research framework.
