Abstract

This article tries strategically envisioning the future of ssitgimgut, the death ritual of Cheolla province, Korea. It suggests we should make it our goal the ritual symbolically to be mecca, and discusses what kind of strategic thinking we need to accomplish the goal in detail. Obviously it is Jindo Islanders who are in charge of finding the direction and methods. Islanders should set up the environment for people to come in and experience the ritual. To do so they should keep or even revive the ritual tradition within to replace its stage show version. They should not only pursue to maintain the tradition in the island, but also to have in mind the problem of reinventing the tradition as a modern expression. Lastly they should be able to claim that they are the center of the networking of all research and education activities regarding the tradition in Korea, providing whatever possible sources and support. As the mecca of ssitgimgut they should be able to update the current status of the ritual in regards to performing arts, touring business and economics and to plan actively for its future.
