1910년대 근대신문 사진으로 읽는 식민지 근대의 춤 문화 -『매일신보』를 중심으로 -

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the development of 'modern' dance culture within the contours and limits of 'colonial' history through 'dance photographs' in modern newspapers of the 1910s. The results of the dance photographs reveal that new modern trends in dance were superimposed within the colonial political situation of the 1910s. Examples of colonial dance culture include the dance performances of kisaengs for inspection groups as part of a tourism project by the Korean governorate, and the reorganization of the “Sŏngt’ak” to center on the Emperor of Japan at the Korean governorate's commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the founding of the country. At Kyŏnghoeru, a space reserved for royal feasts, high-ranking bureaucrats who had sold out the country and businessmen with capital in collaboration with the Japanese regime shouted “Long live the Emperor of Japan,” and at the feast for them, kisaengs performed traditional dances, sometimes in costumes adorned with Ukiyo-e. These dances were humiliating and served as a mobilizing mechanism. In particular, kisaeng were utilized for publicity outside of performance at public festivals and home fairs. As a Japanese colony, Japanese dances were performed in the streets and theater spaces. In particular, the Japanese dance that Sunjong saw when he visited the emperor in Tokyo, Japan, is pictured in Maeil sinbo. However, there was not only a culture of passive, non-subjective dance in the early modern period of colonization; what we are interested in in this article is the active and autonomous exploration of parasitic unions and parasitism under limited conditions. The group voluntarily made a concerted effort to move up the ranks from ch'anggi to kisaeng, and finally won the establishment of a new ch'anggi union through a petition filed by its members. Because of their high social awareness, they also performed charity performances and donations wherever necessary. In dance, the parasites of the parasite union actively embraced new dances.
