Abstract
The primary purpose of this study is to examine by whom the sonnet, which started in Italy and moved to France, becomes the sonnet of France. However, what this study ultimately pays attention to is not only to track the process of Sonnet’s introduction to France, but also to reveal how this process responds to the French Renaissance spirit. Oppenheimer argues that modern thinking and modern literature accompany the birth of Sonnet. Now, poetry aims not for music, action, or performance, but for silent reading. If various medieval literary genres give priority to singing and reading, Sonnet calls for serious reading. Sonnet, which requires visual immersion in formal forms and text arrangement that are difficult to see in other genres, makes the reader bury himself in the text and find himself. Petrarca has already fully expressed his ego’s feelings through the sonnet and admitted that he is a humanist. The Italian sonnets came to France and blossomed, which means that the modernization of the self-consciousness is already beginning in France. In other words, the new wave of the Renaissance has created the atmosphere in which sonnet can be most actively used in France, which in turn results in a reminder that sonnet is a modern genre that responds to the spirit of the Renaissance. This sonnet’s Renaissance spirit is amplified in France and reborn as a French one. In addition to sonnet’s general Renaissance character, the French sonnet accurately responds to the French Renaissance spirit, especially ‘the poetic creation through imitation’ of Pléiade. Poets attempted to write patriotic writings in pursuit of ‘the advocacy and development of French’ through sonnets, and French poetry establishes its own identity and opens the door to a new world of poetry.
