이 논문은 조지훈이 주도적으로 참여한 동인지 『白紙』의 시세계와 『白紙』에 수록된 조지훈의 시를 살펴보고, 초기시에 보여준 시적 편력에 대해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1930년대 후반의 동인지 『白紙』의 시세계와 조지훈의 초기시의 미의식은 밀접하게 연결된다. 그런 점에서 『白紙』의 시세계에 대한 고찰은 조지훈의 초기시에 대한 해명의 단초를 제공할 것으로 보인다. 『白紙』 에 수록된 조지훈의 시는 그의 시세계의 본령이라고 할 수 있는 전통적이고 유교적인 세계관이 투영된 시에 비해 많은 관심을 받지 못한 것이 사실이다. 그러나 『白紙』 에 수록된시에는 선배시인과의 영향관계나, 시와 인생에 대해 고민하던 고뇌가 고스란히 드러나 있다.이 시기는 치열한 탐색의 시기였고, 그 탐색의 과정이 동인지 『白紙』를 통해 잘 드러나 있다. 따라서 조지훈의 『白紙』 수록시는 좀 더 의미 있게 고찰되어야 할 필요가 있다. 『白紙』의 시세계는 두 가지 경향이 비교적 선명하게 나타나고 있다. 하나는 이상 류의 초현실주의적 경향을 보이면서 근대에 대한 비판적 인식을 드러낸 모더니즘 계열의 시이고, 다른 하나는 전통 서정시의 맥락에서 감각적 이미지를 통해 미적인 것을 추구한 시들이다. 조지훈 역시 두 가지 경향을 모두 보이고 있으며, 한편으로는 두 가지 경향이 한 편의 시 안에서 혼재되어 나타나기도 한다. 그러나 모더니즘 계열에 대한 인식과 의지가 없었다면, 전통적 유교적 서정성의 시에서 보여주는 강렬한 근대적 힘은 느낄 수 없었을 것이다. 1930년대 후반, 여타의 동인지가 소수의 기성시인을 앞세워서 세를 키워나가려고 했던 반면, 『白紙』는 문장지에 초회 추천을 받은 ‘조동탁’에게 기대고 있다는 점과 기성 시인의 참여가 미흡해서 세를 확장하지 못했다는 것이 한계라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 『白紙』 역시 문학도의 열정을 가감 없이 드러내고 있으며 당대의 문학적 지형도를 그대로 보여주고 있다는 점에서 의미 있는 동인지라 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to examine the poetic world of ‘literary coterie magazine 『Baek-ji(白紙)』’ Jo JI-hoon took the lead and his poems in it. It will also look at the poetic itinerary of Jo Ji-hoon’s early poems. The poetic world of ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’ in the late 1930s and the aesthetic world of Jo Ji-hoon’s early poems are closely related. In this regard, the examination of the poetic world of ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’ could provide the basis for explaining the early poems of Jo Ji-Hoon. Jo Ji-hoon’s poems published in ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’ have not receive much attention compared to poems revealing the traditional and Confucian view of the world, the major characteristics of his poetic world. His poems in ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’, however, showed the influence of senior poets and agonies of poetry and life. Jo Ji-hoon was fiercely exploring his poetic world and the process of this exploration was evident in the ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’. Therefore, Jo Ji-Hoon’s early poems need to be studied more meaningfully. Two tendencies are presented distinctively in poems of ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’. One is modernist poems with a surrealistic tendency like Lee-sang that shows a critical perception of modernity and the other is poems that pursue aesthetic qualities through sensuous images in the context of traditional lyric poetry. Jo Ji-hoon also shows both tendencies and in a way, two are mixed in one poem. However, without the recognition of and orientation toward the modernist poems, the strong modernistic power in the traditional Confucian lyric poems could not be felt. In the late 1930s, many other literary coterie magazines tried to strengthen their powers placing established poets at the head of their magazines. However, since ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’ depended on Jo Dong-tak who received the first recommendation from the literary magazine ‘『MoonJang(文章)』’ and not many established poets joined the magazine, it could not expand its power. Nevertheless, ‘『Baek-ji(白紙)』’ also revealed the passion of writers without making any kind of adjustment and showed the literary topography of the period as it was.
