Abstract
This paper analyzes the historical materials related to the drift incident and examines the issues of communication and changes in human geography in the island space. The drift incident that occurred during the period from the Joseon Dynasty to the modern era was analyzed, focusing on the island area of Sinan County, Jeollanam-do. There are three major research results. First, we analyzed the island drift cases that appeared in the data in detail. We extracted 208 articles related to cases of drifting from outside to the current Sinan County island area, and classified them into 68 individual cases and analyzed them. Through this, we examined the trend and meaning of the island drift cases. The second is to use the extracted materials to identify specific cases of communication patterns. Three representative cases were used as analysis frameworks. First, the exchange with the civilians that occurred during the drifting Qing Dynasty merchant ship in 1819, second, the exchange case through a banquet to comfort the drifters, and third, the exchange pattern was examined through the case of the spread of Buddhist scriptures through the drifting ship in 1681. The third is an analysis of the drifting incident and the value of the drifting records in relation to the study of island culture, in terms of the influence of the drifting incident on the islanders’ living environment. It examines the changing factors of the drifting incident on the islanders’ human geography, and presents the historical value and meaning contained in the drifting records. For a long time, islands were perceived as spaces of isolation and disconnection. However, this study specifically revealed that, contrary to the existing negative perception, islands were also spaces of communication and exchange. Another result of this study is that it analyzed that records related to drifting should be used importantly in the study of island culture and maritime history.
