본 연구는 다문화에 대한 다양한 철학적 관점을 비교・분석하고 각 관점과 교육과의 관계를 살펴봄으로써 다문화의 의미를 찾는 데에 목적이 있으며, 이를 통해 다문화사회로 급격하게 진입한 우리나라 다문화교육의 방향 설정에 기초 자료를 제공하고자 한다. 이 논지를 풀어나가기 위해서는 주로 미국의 다문화 역사에서 나타난 다문화에 대한 관점 및 기본 입장을 추출하고, 이들을 교육과 관련시켜 비교・분석한 후, 다문화의 본질을 탐색함으로써 학교에서의 다문화교육이 나아갈 방향에 도움을 주고자 하였다. 그 결과 다문화에 대한 관점은 다문화를 받아들이는 형태에 따라 다양하게 추출할 수 있었으며, 각 관점에 따라 학교교육의 방향이 달라질 수 있음을 살펴보았다. 다문화의 본질은 우리에게 가장 긍정적 결과를 가져다주는 다문화주의 관점에서 찾을 수 있었는데, 이는 공존과 인류화합, 자기존중과 타인배려, 그리고 민주주의 이상 실현이다. 나아가 다문화사회로 급격히 진입한 우리나라에서는 다문화의 본질에 부합하는 다문화교육이 필요함을 제안하였다.
Abstract
This study is aimed at looking for significance of multi-culture by comparing and analyzing various philosophical viewpoints about them and looking into relations between those viewpoints and education, finally providing basic data for setting directions of multicultural education of Korea when the nation is rapidly entering into a multicultural society. To explain this point of argument, this article extracted viewpoints about multi-culture appearing in the multicultural history of the United States and compared their relations with education, and then studied the essence of multi-culture to help schools find directions of their multicultural education. As a result, this article could extract various viewpoints about multi-culture depending on types of accepting multi-culture and found that the direction of education could be different according to those viewpoints. The essence of multi-culture could be found from multiculturalism creating the most positive results for us. These results are co-existence and harmony of mankind,self-esteem and thoughtfulness toward others and realization of democratic ideals. Through this study, this article suggested that the education need multicultural education satisfying the essence of multi-culture as Korea has rapidly become a multicultural society.
